This was the first real incident that Amber cited as the start of the abuse from Johnny Depp. Amber claims that she asked Depp about one of his tattoos and he told her it said, "Wino forever". The tattoo had originally said "Winona Forever" in reference to an ex girlfriend, Winona Ryder. Amber laughs and Depp hits her.
It's possible that the explanation for Depp's reaction lay in the fact that he had recently fell off the waggon, or broken his sobriety. This is addressed by Sacha Wass QC in the UK trial. Depp agrees that he was very disappointed in himself. It would not be a huge leap to imagine that Depp would become angry at Amber laughing at something he was sensitive about.
As with many instances of abuse, there is no concrete evidence to support that Amber's claim in this particular instance is true. There is however, the circumstantial evidence as a whole which becomes apparent over the relationship. Depp's continuing struggle with drugs and alcohol are a contributing factor to his loss of control and his spiralling temper.
